Centrally located within the
Jersey Cape, this township covers approximately
75 square miles and is comprised of 15
communities.
A large portion of the
township is situated along the Delaware Bay with
an abundance of wetlands and salt marsh that
serves as a natural habitat for shore and
migratory birds. Each year during late May
and early June, millions of shore birds migrate
to the area to feed on the horseshoe crab eggs
that are deposited along the bay shoreline.
Middle
Township serves as the County Seat and has a
rich, historic past. Today, visitors
driving through the quaint, historic district on
Main Street will see many of the buildings that
were constructed more than a century ago. Many of the bayside
communities began as fishing villages and still
offer excellent salt and freshwater fishing
opportunities.
Some of the finest camping
resorts are also found here. Facilities
ranging from tent to full service RV and
fully-equipped cabins and trailers are available
for rent.
Other outdoor opportunities
include biking, hiking, golfing, sailing, and
jet skiing, to name a few. The Cape May
County Park and Zoo and County Park South and
Wildlife Refuge are situated in Middle Township
as are the Wetlands Institute, Leaming's Run
Gardens, the County Historical Museum, The
Middle Township Performing Arts Center, two
public golf courses and a large shopping
district. Many fine restaurants and
motel accommodations are also found in this
area.
