Situated at the Southern tip
of the Jersey Cape, Lower Township shares a
shoreline with the Atlantic Ocean and the
Delaware Bay. First settled by whalers
more than 300 years ago, the township is made up
of many small villages and hamlets.
The fishing industry continues to be a driving
economic factor in Lower Township, and the Port
of Cape May has become one of the top two
fishing ports on the East Coast.
Most of the area is rural with lush forests,
acres of wetlands and natural beach areas.
The quiet, peaceful way of life that first
attracted people to the area has been maintained
throughout the years. Many
descendants of the area's founding families
still live in Lower Township.
Farming is also a way of life in the area with
many fields covered with corn, lima beans,
tomatoes, peppers and other crops. The
Diamond Beach section lies along the ocean and
is a very popular beach resort with fine motel
accommodations, luxurious condominiums, and
excellent restaurants.
Attractions found in the area
include Cape May Point State Park, Higbee
Wildlife Area, Historic Cold Spring Village,
Cape May-Lewes Ferry, Cape May Bird Observatory,
and Schellenger's Landing Wharf.
Outdoor activities include fishing, boating,
sailing, golfing, and biking.
Excellent camping facilities from tent to
full-service RV and fully-equipped cabins can be
rented throughout the area.
